about
Never Normal Records & ANTI-MASS are excited to announce their collaborative compilation, Gukuba, born out of 12 months of sound exchanges, field recordings, & online listening sessions between East African and Afro-Diasporic artists and producers indigenous to the USA.
This compilation focuses on new approaches to dance, sound and rhythms between Africa and the global Black Diaspora.
There are a myriad of sonic influences in this body of work, from Techno, to Acholi Electronic, to Footwork and more. The music of Gukuba spans the sonic stories and cultural backgrounds of the 10 collaborators featured on the project.
Featured collaborators include rising artists Authentically Plastic, Turkana and Nsasi (ANTI-MASS/ Uganda) Tayhana (NAAFI) and Suzi Analogue, Heavee, NO EYES, Safiyahh, Queens D. Light and Elevation (Never Normal Soundsystem/ USA- Worldwide).
The first single from Gukuba: “Desserts”, out worldwide 11/2/2021 is a thrilling collaboration between producer/djs Safiyahh (USA) and Nsasi (Uganda) that lures listeners to the dancefloor blending techno, house, and East African rhythms. The featured artwork is a collaboration with Miami native, Haitian-American contemporary artist Mwanel Pierre-Louis. The full project releases January 2022.

My whole body agrees with the pace of this short but solid track list. A generous helping of acoustic rhythm samples ignited by breakbeats add extra attention to full range movement on the dancefloor. Not a beat wasted. cherub420
